Desert Dog Police K9 Trails & Public Safety Expo returns Sat., Oct. 26 & Sun., Oct. 27 to WestWorld of Scottsale, 16601 N. Pima Rd. Scottsdale 85260, featuring a new faster-paced competition than ever! More than 70 teams from across the USA will complete daring obstacles inside the Equidome and master intense challenges to earn the titles of Hard Dog and Top Dog.
“We are thrilled to bring back the Desert Dog competition and expo to WestWorld for our 21st year” says Tony Sanborn, President of ALECA, “This year, fans can expect more action than ever on the Equidome floor with multiple course changes throughout the weekend. The audience is sure to be on the edge of their seats when they see what we have in store.”
Andrew Carlsson, Director of Operations added, “The North Hall will be filled with lively vendors, profound guest speakers and interactive features including fitness challenges at the Scottsdale Police Department booth, real-life armored vehicles the ‘Rook’ and the ‘Bear’ for kids to climb in to explore and more.”
POLICE K9 TRIALS. Teams of K9s and handlers will compete in an extreme sports contest with multiple challenges inside the Equidome arena in four varying obstacle courses this year, testing the skills of both human handler and police K9. Teams are scored on speed, agility, K9 obedience, apprehension and more. New challenges will be introduced this year such as K9s scaling a 7-foot wall to catch a perpetrator in a bite suit on the other side, leaping over wrecked cars to drag the perpetrator out. Others test the dog’s speed, agility and obedience amidst all the distractions. The top 12 hardest biting and hitting K9s are hand-selected throughout weekend’s regular run to compete in the final field event to select the “Hard Dog” award.
PUBLIC SAFETY EXPO. While the Equidome competition ensures, the North Hall showcases a variety of displays to explore – from early holiday shopping to ‘Trunk or Treat’ for kids of all ages. Friends and families also can visit early every city’s law enforcement booth to meet and learn from those who protect Arizona communities. Climb aboard real-life armored vehicles the ‘Rook’ and the ‘Bear’ and firetrucks, squad cars and helicopters. Explore exciting demos, displays, expert speakers, food and a variety of vendors. Guest speakers include 2023 Miss Arizona Candance Kanavel who is also a Tempe Police officer; and ALECA consultant & official veterinarian, Dr Wayne A. Svoboda, DVM, MS, among others.
COLIN’S K9 DREAM. Colin’s K9 Dream is a special annual presentation in the Equidome happening during “halftime,” to reward a young child fighting a chronic illness with an experience of a lifetime whether it’s becoming an honorary police officer for a day or visiting Disneyland. The annual ceremonial tradition originated from the courageous young boy, Colin, who fought hard in his battle with terminal cancer, a battle he eventually lost. Colin’s story gave birth to Colin’s K9 Dream and is now a tribute to him.
