ATC Kicks Off Holiday Season with Scrooge! The Musical

Show Headlined by Tony Award-Winning Actor Shuler Hensley

Arizona Theatre Company is excited to announce it will kick off the holiday season with Scrooge! The Musical, an adaptation of the Oscar-nominated film, Scrooge created by Oscar-winning, Grammy-winning, and Tony-nominated composer, Leslie Bricusse. The production will run in Phoenix from Dec. 9 to Dec. 30 at the Tempe Center for the Arts.

Scrooge! The Musical is a fresh take on a beloved holiday classic, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol,” said Matt August, ATC Kasser Family Artistic Director. “This season, we’re thrilled to welcome Valley residents to enjoy a production that is sure to put everyone in the holiday spirit. With the creative team and cast we’ve assembled, the audience is in for a spectacular evening.”

Scrooge! The Musical will be directed by Matt August, the Kasser Family Artistic Director, and will be headlined by Shuler Hensley, a Tony Award-winning actor. Hensley’s list of roles and awards is long and illustrious. His film appearances include The Legend of Zorro, Van Helsing, The Bread, My Sweet (aka A Wedding for Bella), Odd Thomas, Cruiser, and the upcoming Into the Wilderness. He is also the Artistic Director at City Springs Theatre Company and on the founding advisory board for the new Musical Theatre Program at The Manhattan School of Music.

August is a theatre, opera, and film director and educator whose productions, like TheGrinch, have broken box office records on Broadway. He has also performed in London, across the UK, Off-Broadway, in major regional theatres, at festivals, on national tours, at the Grand Ole Opry, and for three holiday seasons at Madison Square Garden.

The production follows Ebenezer Scrooge, as he goes on a fantastical journey through his life over the course of a single Christmas Eve night. After a warning from the ghost of his business partner Jacob Marley, the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future take Scrooge on a musical adventure that leads him towards his hopeful redemption.

“The hope for this show is that kids and families understand the power of a live performance even with a production that’s been on the big screen,” August said. “We’ve taken Leslie’s original plot with its iconic writing and added big elements that will make Scrooge! The Musical a spectacular holiday tradition that Arizona families do not want to miss.”
