20 Free & Fun Things to Do This Summer

Enjoy a little fun and happiness in the summer.

Want to enjoy Arizona without spending on family fun? Find free things to do including outdoors activities, museums, and more near you. If you're looking for more, find free events happening now or soon on our events calendar.


1. Host a Movie Night

You can easily host a movie night with family and friends. Make it more fun and ask your guests to come in pajamas.

2. Bike Around

Enjoy your neighborhood or city and ride your bike through your city bike routes.

3. Collect Natural Object to Create Art

Collect leaves and flowers to press to make art you can hang on your wall. Find rocks, stones or pinecones and bring home to decorate, paint or create your own fairy house.

4. Head to your Local Library

Your neighborhood public library isn't just books on shelves. You can also borrow music, movies and e-books. There are reading clubs for adults and story times for little kids. And there are activities galore to keep your teens busy all summer. 

5. Go on a Scavenger Hunt

You can find tons of scavenger hunt ideas online or craft your own. Grab your friends, set up prizes and enjoy the outdoors.

6. Play Board Games

Invite your friends, grab some snacks and plan to play your favorite games.

7. Head Outdoor to our Favorite Lakes or Reservoirs

There's nothing like hanging out near a body of water in the summertime. We love to visit our local reservoirs and lakes with family and friends. I have gathered some of our favorite Arizona Reservoirs and Lakes - The Macaroni Kid Guide!

8. Head to Arizona Boardwalk 

Starting this month, explore OdySea Aquarium and Butterfly Wonderland for some exciting events. Arizona Boardwalk June Events 

9. Enjoy the Trails

Arizona has a lot of trails to explore and we have gathered a great list to choose from our favorite hikes to do with family. 

10. Head to the Park for a Picnic

Scottsdale has an abundance of beautiful parks that are perfect for a picnic. Check out our top parks, as well as nearby parks to pick up food. 

11. Splash Pads

Cool off with refreshing family fun at splash pads. Scottsdale Quarter, Desert Ridge Marketplace and many parks are just a few places with free water features. 

12. Check out Alta Climbing 

Grab your kids and head to Alta Climbing offering climbing for professional and kids alike. In addition to climbing, stay on top of your fitness goals in the fitness center or sign up for yoga or indoor cycle including parent/child classes so be sure to check it out. Alta Climbing is located in Queen Creek. 

13. Tour Old Town Scottsdale

Take a self-guided tour of historic Old Town Scottsdale and discover the self-proclaimed "West's most Western town". 

14. ASU Gammage Broadway Season 

ASU Gammage is gearing up for a new Broadway 2022 lineup. A season filled with hot, fresh from Broadway shows, powerful plays and some all-time Tony Award winning favorites. 

15. Hike Pinnacle Peak Park

Head up to Scottsdale to hike the Pinnacle Peak Park trail, which winds 1.75 miles through the Sonoran Desert. The one-way trail alternates between uphill switchbacks and downhill stretches with views of the surrounding neighborhoods. 

16. Visit the Bat Cave

Visit the bat cave where thousands of Mexican free-tailed bats take flight every night around dusk from May to October. You can find the tunnel near 40th Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix. 

17. Visit the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art 

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is free Thursdays and second Saturdays. Exhibitions rotate so there's always something new to see. 

18. Scottsdale Arts District

Stroll through the Scottsdale Arts District at the weekly ArtWalk. You can browse local galleries located primarily along Main Street and Marshall Way at the year-round event, which happens every Thursday except Thanksgiving from 7 to 9 p.m. The people-watching isn't bad either.  

19.  Baking with Kids

Baking Bread with Kids: King Arthur Flour’s free online lessons are an extension of the company’s Bake for Good Kids program, which provides a free recipe book with directions for dinner rolls, pizza dough, muffins, and more.

20. Gardening with family

Kids Gardennig: Free downloadable lesson plans, activities, and guides for gardening with kids at home.
