September 2021 Special Events  





Butterfly Wonderland transports guests of all ages to the rainforest by immersing them in the world of butterflies and other rainforest animals.  Learn about Monarch migration in a captivating 3D movie, observe live chrysalis as they emerge naturally into beautiful butterflies, spend ample time strolling through the conservatory with the butterflies, get up close to unique reptiles that inhabit rainforests across the world, and even indulge in edible insects!

SPECIAL EVENTS

Bug Club

September 12

11 a.m. 

Little ones can learn about some amazing insects in this fun story time and educational lesson geared for children. After story time, experts from Butterfly Wonderland introduce the audience to multiple LIVE insects which may include walking sticks, beetles, the Giant African Millipede, or something even more fascinating! FREE WITH ADMISSION. 


Buzz About Bees

September 19

12 p.m.

Learn about bees and maintaining hives plus lots more from local Beekeeper Cricket Aldridge, founder of AZ Backyard Beekeepers. Visit her in the Conservatory at the Honeybee Exhibit. There will also be a special Q&A. Honey is available for purchase in the Butterfly Treasures Gift Shop. FREE WITH ADMISSION.

 

Reptiles Up Close!  

Every Sunday in September

2 p.m. 

In this interactive experience, enjoy an educational talk with Butterfly Wonderland Reptile General Curator Lindsey Meder. Learn about the many reptiles and amphibians that share the rainforest with tropical butterflies. There will also be a Q&A session with Lindsey. FREE WITH ADMISSION.


Yoga in the Rainforest

September 16

5 p.m.

Take an amazing yoga class surrounded by thousands of gorgeous butterflies. This hour-long session will guide guests through a series of yoga poses that help build strength and flexibility. Butterfly Brush Strokes at Night

6 p.m.— 8:30 p.m.

Plan a night out with friends or a special date at Butterfly Wonderland. Enjoy light refreshments while learning to paint a beautiful, abstract butterfly in this fun and interactive class led by artist Judith Nunez. Class held in the Café. Supplies and paint provided. Magic of Music and Butterflies!

Enjoy this elevated, magical experience in the Conservatory amongst thousands of beautiful butterflies while listening to the irresistible music of classical violinist Jonathan Levingston. This one-of-a-kind performance elevates the Butterfly Wonderland experience like never before – even the butterflies agree! FREE WITH ADMISSION.

Monarch Butterfly Tagging Trip in Southern Arizona 

GOT MILKWEED! Campaign SPECIAL EVENT

September 19 

9 a.m. – 1 p.m.  

Learn how to tag Monarch butterflies with Butterfly Wonderland’s Director of Education, Adriane Grimaldi! Observe Monarchs in their natural habitat as they make their way to Mexico. See first-hand the importance of Monarch migration and the significance of tagging this special species. Cost: $20 members; $25 for public; a portion of the proceeds goes to the Southwest Monarch Study. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited. RSVP by September 15th by calling (480) 800-3000, ext. 204 where volunteers will also receive detailed directions for the meeting point (southern Arizona near Sonoita; roughly three hours south of Scottsdale). *COVID safety precautions will be taken during this tagging trip.

Butterfly Wonderland Date Night - Painting a Butterfly

6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Make it a date! Get a sitter and enjoy a unique date night at Butterfly Wonderland for this exciting painting class, featuring artist Judith Nunez. Couples will learn to paint a beautiful abstract butterfly. All paint supplies provided. Class held in the Café. Limited to 20 people in the Café. $30/public; $15 for members (covers supplies). Waking Up with Butterflies

8:30-9:30 a.m.

Enjoy a quiet hour photographing the butterflies, birds, or reptiles. Entomologist Derek Kellogg will be available to answer questions from guests about butterflies, plants, and the rainforest environment. Ages 18 & up; $24.95+tax for public. Free for members.
