Did COVID-19 just turn your life upside down? Things are changing quickly every day, and most of us have seen our typical routines turned upside down. More and more workplaces are allowing or requiring remote work, while school and daycare closings and “social distancing” restrictions mean that whole families are suddenly spending a whole lot more time at home together. Regardless, we need to get work done!

It won’t be smooth or perfect, but there are a few strategies you can use to make your new situation a little easier. I have gathered a few tips to help you through this difficult moment. So, feel free to pick and choose from the ideas below, give it a few days and tweak to suit your household.

1. Explore a schedule that is best for you and your family.

It's important to line up your day and set "office" hours and include your child's school schedule to help balance the day in hopes to get things done. On top of a schedule, I also utilize a check list to help me accomplish the things I need to get done for the day.

2. Use naptime to your advantage

I have a two year old and nine year old. So, I know if you still have kids talking naps, then you've got an hour or more of interrupted time to focus on your daily task or work. While my daughter is doing her online learning, I take full advantage to complete work that requires full attention like my weekly newsletter or phone calls.

3. Have a dedicated home office or work space

Some parents have a dedicated office in a room, some travel around the house with your laptop or your kitchen counter becomes your working space. Whatever works for you, know your getting things done! If you have small children, think about adding a small workspace for them. Give them a desk that's just their size and stock up with all kinds of fun things to use and do; pencils, colors, paper, stickers to name a few. This won't give you 8 hours of free time, but I assure you if will buy you more time than you expect.

4. Keep kids entertained

A little goes along way when it comes to kids. I have found that giving them extra quality attention in the morning, I get a few extra hours to get some work done. I set aside a few cool toys that my son can play with or sometimes I put on a special movie. That gives me at least a few hours with my laptop in tow to get ahead or send emails out. I also found that regular breaks throughout the day help minimize interruptions. If it works and it's safe, use it!

 5. Set up snack and drink stations

I prepare lunches and a bunch of snacks the night before. I have changed the pantry to help organize reachable snacks, so they can grab some while I am on a call. I have also designated a kitchen drawer for kid-safe cups they can reach and get their own water. I give my children the ability to choose some of their own self-serve meals and snacks to help build their independence, a win-win for all.

6. Tap into other family or friends to help

Many parents hire help for at least part of the day or tap into family and friends to help. Due to COVID-19 many don't have this choice or can't afford it, then set up video calls with family and your kids friends to help supervise while your busy. Set up an art or music virtual class, a craft class or storytime online to help with a little distraction.

7. Create a boredom box

I have heard this before and it works! A boredom box is one of those days that you absolutely need to finish a task or project and need to keep the kids occupied. Its a simple box of crafts or activities that help direct your kids to play a specific way or create a specific project or craft. There are many ways to make a boredom box. Use an empty Amazon box or get a cute one at Hobby Lobby and put some of these fun items inside:

  • Glue
  • Pipe Cleaners
  • Straws
  • Children's Scissors
  • Construction Paper
  • Popsicle Sticks
  • Stickers
  • Beads
  • Yarn
  • Balloons
  • Feathers
  • Cupcake Liners
  • Plastic Jewelry
  • Coffee Filters
  • Cupcake Liners
  • Hole Punch
  • Paper Lunch Bags
  • Glitter
  • Beads

I am continually trying different strategies and tweaking my routine to better fit our family and our changing needs day to day. It’s a balancing act, so use what works, and ditch what doesn’t. Have some patience as you do the same with your family, and you’ll hit on the combination that works for you.
